Inspiration for "Reward"
In today's culture, most expect others to be self-seeking and out for number one. It seems people have grown so accustomed to that behavior that when we encounter someone acting contrary to that, even within the Church, it almost confuses us and takes us aback. As Christians, we are called to be humble and to die for ourselves. To put others first and to do what is counter intuitive. Have you heard the story of Ruth and Naomi? After Naomi's husband died, instead of returning to her family of origin, she made the decision to follow Ruth, who was also recently widowed, back to her homeland. This was absolutely counter-culture!
Once Naomi got to Ruth's homeland, she met Boaz, family to her in-laws. He saw how she was so devoted and self-less she was toward Ruth that he made sure to take care of her. She was given the chance to harvest left overs in the fields and was even invited to his table for bread and wine. For a widow of this time without her family to care for her, she would have been destined for death, at very least poverty. It may have been reasonable for Boaz to take care of Ruth, but Naomi? That was a stretch! They were both acting in a way that was counter-culture. Naomi was provided for, and eventually, Boaz gained another wife. They were both rewarded for the way the served each other and the LORD.
